For Providers
Mave is a postpartum companion app.
Not a clinical tool.
What Mave is
An app for postpartum mothers to name what they're feeling, read about why it's happening, and have a calm conversation about it at 3am when nobody else is awake. Conversations are generated by Claude (Anthropic's AI) and shaped by a system prompt designed for postpartum context — emotional continuity, stage-aware tone, and a strict no-diagnosis rule.
Beneath the chat surface, Mave maintains a curated library of 29 postpartum resource articles, 8 recognition library categories, and a diagnostic entry point for visitors who can't yet name what they're experiencing. The content was developed from published postpartum research and common themes reported by mothers — not generated by AI.
What Mave is not
- A therapist, psychiatrist, or licensed mental health provider
- A crisis intervention service — Mave routes to human resources (PSI, 988, MMHH, Crisis Text Line) when language indicates risk
- A diagnostic tool — the system prompt explicitly forbids diagnosis or naming clinical conditions
- A substitute for postpartum follow-up care, lactation support, or medical evaluation
- A surveillance tool — conversation data is private; nothing is shared with third parties beyond Anthropic API processing
When you might point a client to Mave
- When she needs language for something she can’t yet name. /start-here presents 24 lowercase feeling-statements; she picks the one that lands.
- When the conversation she needs is at 3am, and you’re not. Mave is built specifically for that hour, with calm tone and no urgency unless she signals crisis.
- When she needs to read something specific. Direct her to /resources/<topic> for any of the 29 evidence-informed articles — postpartum rage, intrusive thoughts, identity loss, mental load, and others.
- When she’s hesitant about therapy. Mave can be a softer first step. Many users sit with their experience in Mave before deciding to reach out for clinical support — Mave actively encourages that step.
- Between sessions. Mave remembers context across conversations, so she doesn’t have to re-explain her situation every time.
How Mave handles crisis language
Every message is monitored for language that may indicate immediate risk — self-harm intent, intrusive harm thoughts toward the baby, dissociative or psychotic features, severe sleep deprivation paired with disorientation. When detected, Mave immediately surfaces crisis resources at the top of the screen and pivots the conversation away from product-mode into warm-handoff mode.
The resources Mave surfaces are aligned across every safety surface in the product:
- Maternal Mental Health Hotline: 1-833-852-6262 (postpartum-specific, 24/7)
- Postpartum Support International: 1-800-944-4773
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988
- Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741
Mave will not attempt to manage a crisis. It will reroute. Full public-facing description at /crisis-support.
