The Thoughts That Scared You
The unwanted mental scenes your brain showed you — vivid, fast, frightening — that you didn’t ask for and immediately wanted to unsee. These are not wishes. They are not plans. They are one of the most common and least-discussed experiences of the postpartum period.
What it can feel like
- Your brain started playing out scenarios you never wanted to imagine
- The thought came so fast you thought it meant something about you
- You felt like you needed to explain yourself
- You were too scared to tell anyone
- You kept googling it and getting more scared
- The fact that it horrified you is the whole point
“making up scenarios in my head i couldn’t stop”
“the thought came so fast”
“i felt less insane when i found out it was common”
“i was too scared to say it out loud”
“what if this thought means something”
“i kept googling it and it made everything worse”
The thought scared you because it wasn’t what you wanted.
What this is
Intrusive thoughts are a recognized feature of postpartum anxiety — not psychosis, not wishes, not warning signs about who you are as a parent. They are the anxious brain generating worst-case scenarios, which is what anxious brains do. The distress they cause is the signal that you don’t want those outcomes. That distinction matters.
